The
letter for today is: T, where I feature temptation
and tomato.
Temptation
refers to something you shouldn't have. I'm trying to think of what would tempt
me, but I can't bring anything to mind. Perhaps I'm too disciplined, or maybe I
possess everything I want. I don't eat chocolate or anything that's not good
for me. And I don't miss it.
However,
this wasn't the case in my youth. I loved melting chocolate on my tongue,
eating sweet, milky custard tarts and munching shortbread biscuits with their
crumbly texture. As a treat of course. I worked hard and could burn off the
calories. I looked forward to the temptation
and loved the flavors.
The
old name love-fruit refers to the tomato. When the plant first arrived
in England, tomato must have been
all the rage. Everyone wanted to taste the flesh and slide the seeds down their
throat in the tangy, juicy pulp.
A
great temptation to those who
couldn't afford tomatoes.
