A - Z Writing Challenge: L

The letter for today is: L, where I feature left-over and lemon.

When we eat a meal, does the left-over food become second-rate? No. The quality remains the same. Yet the left-over's gain a stigma for some. Not me though—I love reheated soup. The flavor improves over time.
Lemon sometimes leaves a sour memory, yet lemon compliments fish so well and removes the oily flavor from the fried food.
There's a saying here in England: Left standing like a lemon, which means an idiot standing alone.
So left-over means outcast and so does lemon.

  1. I just had a discussion yesterday with my teenage son about the quality of left-overs.... he was getting picky ;)

  2. Love that connection between left-overs and lemon! And, of course, there's always the phrase, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade'!

  4. When I was a student I used to love cold pizza for breakfast, left over from the night before. Not sure I'd do that now. But I still enjoy Boxing Day bubble and squeak, which is where you take all the veg left over from Christmas and fry them up together. Mmmm. (My partner hates it!)

  5. Leftovers are a working mother's best trick! Some foods are actually better leftover - stuffed peppers, a pot of sauce with meatballs. Yum!

I also love to freeze food. I made a huge baked ziti for one of the kids' birthday parties and had extra ingredients. I filled a square Pyrex dish and froze it uncooked. A few weeks later, I popped it in the oven and made the perfect meal for the four of us.

  6. Not so long ago in the past 'left-overs' became tomorrow's meal with a few extra veg to bulk it out.
    Interesting blog.

  8. I love leftovers. One time when my daughter was little she mistakenly thought a lemon was an orange and bit right into it. The expression on her face was priceless!! Visiting from the A-Z challenge. :D

  9. Interesting. I actually love left-overs (and often outcasts, too).

  10. Hi Francene, visiting from the AtoZ Blog challenge, thanks for your comments! In my house we never have any "left-overs". When I cook my curries, I usually make a 6 quart dutch-oven full of curry, so it is meant to be eaten over a few days :-) I cook only 2-3 times a week, often starting my cooking around 9 pm on fridays, so it is almost midnight when I am done. I also add the juice of half a lemon just before turning of the heat, this makes the flavors of the spice really come out once it has been in the fridge for a day :-)

  11. I do think that left-over have a certain stigma although bubble and squeak is a favourite of ours and I agree that soup is better the next day. I always make a big batch and freeze it. I also freeze lemons sliced up so I can pop a slice in a drink.

  12. very nice to hear about this left over food businss and lemons,:-)
In our country I mean in our state, or Malayalees or Keralites
make a wonderful food with the left over rise, keep the rice in water mixed curd adding few cut onions, with green chilli, keep it overnight, morning you mix it thoroughly with all the ingredients makes a delicious food for the breakfast and it is counted as so nutritious too.
Hey do you want to try this??? LOL
PS; THis food stuff is called "Pazham kanji" ie. old rice porridge

  13. Interesting parallel, Francene. I hoard left-overs too :) And I'm a huge--HUGE--fan of lemon (or lime). You may or may not know this, but it's a Mexican trait--we put lemon (lime--until a few years ago, lemons weren't that common in Mexico) on everything: soups, meat, fish, salads... Even on fruit, like the green mangoes sold outside schools on a stick. Loooove me my lemon!

  14. Have to agree, certain foods only taste better if they're left for a bit. Not to mention re-used to spice up other recipes:)...Hmmm, wish I had some left-over plum pudding right now:) Nice one:)

  15. Some things are much better after they've reached "left-over" status...spaghetti and lasagna are two such things.

Thanks for visiting P.S. Annie! I hope that you're enjoying the A to Z challenge. I am. :)

    Have a great day!

  16. I am going to use that saying: "Left standing like a lemon." Love it! Agree that some things like soup are even better as left-overs. I had left-over pasta for lunch today and it was even better than last night.

  17. Hello, we don't eat a lot of left-overs. We tend to finish everything I make the same day I make it. (I notice you live in England. We're off to London and also Scotland in June!)

  18. So interesting! I love the associations and I've never heard that English saying before. I learned something new. Hopefully I won't have to use it on anyone. Lol. Great entry! :0)
