A - Z Writing Challenge: O

The letter for today is: O, where I feature opportunity and orange.

Do we make our own opportunities?
I can't think of a single time when chance has changed my life. I've instigated each opportunity by working toward it with a positive attitude. Other people have strokes of luck—they win the lottery or inherit a fortune from an unknown aunt. Not me. I just plough ahead, doing the best I can.
I could compare each of my opportunities to peeling an orange. We know from experience that juicy pulp lies inside. But first, we need to remove the skin.
Each of my major life changes have come about after I made a conscious decision to strive for a goal.
Some say the mind influences events—you can ask the universal consciousness and wait for your desire to arrive. I agree that a positive attitude helps events come about. And maybe a loving Creator watches over us and always wants the best for us. I'd like to think so.
In the meantime, I'll make my own luck. I'll work toward what feels right and good. I'll love my fellow man and obey the commandments. Apart from that, I'd rather peel an orange than wait for good fortune to bless me.

  1. Juicy thoughts! (And no Peach for tomorrow. You'll need to try pineapple or papaya!)

  2. MMm very tastey thoughts. Also very true, I to believe that conscious efforts put the wheel in motion.

    Thanks for sharing with me.

  3. Yup good luck rarely just "happens." I'm trying to visit all the A-Z Challenge Blogs this month. My alphabet is at myqualityday.blogspot.com

  4. I've had a few things work out for me but mostly it's hard work. A little luck never hurt anyone though. :)

  5. I am finding miracles occuring on an almost daily basis - and I'm not really doing anything. It's amazing. I do believe you have to 'create' your own luck and taking action is part of that, but I believe it's also about trusting and noticing the miracles, even the tiny ones. Nice post. Thanks for dropping by my blog and lovely to meet you on this A-Z.

  7. I appreciate your optimism and faith. As I began this A-Z Blogging Challenge, I wasn't sure where it would take me. But digging deeper into my research on Van Diemen's Land has brought new insights and helps with drafting my story. So, taking that first step, persevering, and, as you say, setting a goal, creates opportunity. I'm not saying every day is easy. Certainly crits on IWW have suffered, but let's blog on!

  8. Hi Francene – I think we make our own luck and that “good fortune” comes to those who expect it. And I believe opportunities come to those who expect them – and work for them. Sitting on the couch and doing nothing is unlikely to get anyone to where they want to be! :)

Doesn’t mean that sometimes we have outside stuff to deal with. We can’t control other people, acts of nature, etc. But we can certainly control our reactions to them. :)

Thanks for stopping by my A-Z blog post, "O is for O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

  9. I think we do both...make them and notice them. Life is filled with miracles and opportunities.
Goals are good and give you purpose. But life always throws you curveballs.

  10. Hi Francene, I think we do indeed help guide our opportunities and the resulting good luck that follows. Hard works does pay off. :) Much like peeling that orange and getting to the juicy goodness inside! ~ Angela, Whole Foods Living, http://www.wholefoodsliving.blogspot.com/

  11. I've tried very hard to pray for [or to ask that universal consciousness] for changes but it doesn't work for me either. I'll go and peel an orange instead.

  12. Hi Francene. You sound a very determined person and I like your use of the orange to demonstrate your philosophy on life. I think there is a combination of forces at work in our lives, but I always remember some sage advice I was given: 'If you aim at nothing, you're sure to hit it.'
